I like to do the same thing and sometimes (I can put on my big girl pants and admit it) I play devil's advocate just to be obstinate. Which is not cool. BUT - when done the right way and with the right 'end in mind' - I thnk it's a valuable skill set/mind set to have.

Cindy, I started my HR career in the temp industry in a year that you may or may not have been alive. Then I stopped for many years to go be a Marine, and sort out what I "wanted to be" - and go to college. So, at the age of 28 I was really starting my HR career. I looked at my peers who were in mid-level management and realized I wasn't going to compete with them. I had my own path. And I rocked that path for many years, doing some pretty cool things for the people in my organizations... and then, at 40 , I left HR to do wine... because I love it!

The lesson. Don't compete. Be you.. "worry about Cindy" - your Mom's pretty smart! And you never know where your path might lead. As long as you are doing what you want to do, and are happy doing it... the opportunities will come. The happiness shows. It motivates others to help you succeed.

And you are a pretty cool chick. No matter what level in the organization you might be, or what job you are holding!

I can relate to this without a doubt. I was always cool as a cucumber at work. As far back as I can remember nothing going on at home influenced me emotionally at work.

Nowadays, I can't really help the comings and goings of my emotions. My job, however, allows me to "hide" to some extent from those I work with. I feel that my emotions make those people uncomfortable. I tend to think about that more than anything else and try my best not to be a burden on them.

Hi Cindy,

Thank you for your participation in the series!

Wow, moving to CA - I bet that was an experience. Just as you stated, if you wouldn't have taken this path, you wouldn't have gotten in HR.

Be sure to check out the second and third set of questions.

Oh so well put, but don't take all the blame some of us employees need to start realizing the "honey vs vinegar" factor too! State the problem, give the story, allow HR rep to process, discuss potential solutions then act. Now there is bad cultural blood on both sides, but I think you have the right idea with focusing on 1 person a week. Suggestion start blogging about the those wins!

Now the funny thing is image if you busted into there desk or called them on the phone about screwing up the TPS report or sending that email with bad punctuation.....They would get the point relationships are a two way street!
